Inspired by a journey to the Amazon and a powerful encounter with Juliana of the Yagua Tribe, Guerrera is a deeply personal reflection on strength, loss and identity. The painting honours the artist’s late father, who called her “mi guerrera” (my warrior), a name that continues to guide her through grief and healing. Juliana’s quiet resilience became a mirror of the artist’s own journey, while the weathered boat beneath her symbolises endurance through life’s storms.
At its core, Guerrera bridges individual and collective histories, giving space to Indigenous voices too often erased by colonial narratives. It stands as a call to honour underrepresented cultures and challenge Eurocentric narratives that dominate the art world.
