About

Valeria Alvarez is a Colombian artist whose practice is rooted in the relationship between history, culture and identity. Raised in South London, she works from a perspective shaped by heritage and displacement, often considering how cultural memory survives across different places and generations.

Through oil painting, Alvarez returns to histories that have been silenced, distorted or overlooked through colonial narratives. Her work centres Indigenous ancestry and the capacity of art to restore dignity and agency to those who have often been represented through an external gaze.

For Alvarez, painting is a form of reclamation: a way of questioning inherited versions of history while creating space for other truths to emerge. Rather than attempting to recover a complete or singular account, her work stays with the gaps, fragments and uncertainties that shape cultural identity, using them as a starting point for reconnection and reimagining.
